Malaysian and other halal food manufacturers have been making inroads in various international markets for quite some time now. The Jakim-certified halal food companies have been selling their products in all parts of the world. According to Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, cases such as Muslims using or sharing the same plate as the ones used to serve pork or non-halal foods can easily be avoided if Muslims do not patronise such food outlets.

The halal meat industry has had a mammoth amount of media coverage in the last few weeks. Following The Sun’s front page article on the ‘Halal Secret of Pizza Express’ (7thMay 2014) a snow-ball effect has occurred and issues pertaining to whether halal slaughter is humane and whether all religiously slaughtered meat (as well as stunned and non-stunned meat) should be clearly labelled. A move to ban unstunned halal meat from Lancashire schools could be delayed or overturned after the threat of a judicial review was made to Lancashire County Council. Councillors in Lancashire voted in October that in future any halal meat served in schools must be butchered from pre-stunned animals, with the exception of poultry. The ruling on beef and lamb was due to take effect when the council’s meat supply contract was renewed this month. However, there is a three month period from the time that Full Council made their decision in late October for any party which disagrees with the…

Malaysia has 13 halal standards, which not only certify food items as well as food premises, but also cosmetics, personal care, pharmaceuticals and logistics.

Halal slaughterhouses that do not stun animals before cutting their throats are three times as likely to breach animal welfare rules as others, an investigation by The Times has found.

The abattoirs, which supply supermarkets and schools, have also failed more than half of their government inspections in the past three years, an analysis of audit reports shows.

Workers have assaulted inspectors at several of the plants, according to Food Standards Agency (FSA) records.

Leading vets last night called for an investigation into why non-stun halal abattoirs had…

Japan is emerging as a preferred tourist destination for Muslims. Though the country has a very small percentage of Muslim residents, it is generously making room for cross-cultural amalgamation by coming up with facilities such as mosques, prayer rooms, halal food outlets, alcohol-free restaurants and much more.

The fact that numbers of Muslim tourists are on the rise in the last few years has brought with it a commercial boom. The need for Halal food is increasing, and Japan today has a number of such food outlets with ramped up efforts to better cater to a Muslim population.…
