Halal Street Food fans and white sauce aficionados, rejoice! Halal Street Food is set to open its second brick-and-mortar location in Camp North End’s Keswick District this summer. This exciting expansion promises to bring the beloved flavors of their traditional halal dishes to a vibrant new setting, further enriching Charlotte’s diverse culinary scene.
A Feast for the Senses
Halal Street Food’s new location will continue to serve its iconic dishes such as chicken and lamb over rice, kabobs, gyros, and hummus with pita — all generously topped with their famous white sauce. In addition to these classics, the menu will also feature falafel, fresh salads, and a variety of vegan options, catering to diverse dietary preferences. Breakfast and dessert selections will also make their debut, ensuring there’s something for everyone from morning to night.
The story of Halal Street Food is deeply rooted in family and cultural fusion. Khuram and Damaris Bashir, the husband-and-wife team behind the brand, launched the Halal Food Cart in 2016 at Trade and Tryon Streets in Uptown Charlotte. Their menu was inspired by their first restaurant in Michigan, Mi Barrio Halal Latin Grill. In 2021, they opened their first brick-and-mortar location in MoRA.
“Halal Street Food has always been about family and the way food brings us together. My parents didn’t speak the same language when they met, and now our menu marries the beauty of their Pakistani and Dominican cultures. It’s a love story, and you can taste it in the food,” said Cristopher Collado, the Bashirs’ son and CEO of the restaurant.
The new Camp North End location will pay homage to the original Halal Food Cart, which remains a popular spot. The interior design will feature a communal table, fostering a sense of community and shared experiences. Outdoor seating will be available next to the restaurant on the new Keswick Platform, part of a joint development by ATCO Properties & Management and Shorenstein Properties.
Located adjacent to the dairy-free ice cream shop Seemingly Overzealous and near the cocktail lounge Stay Inn, both still under development, Halal Street Food will be in good company. The Keswick food stalls, including Bleu Barn North End, La Caseta, Plant Joy, and SARU, add to the vibrant food scene of Camp North End.
“The Bashirs have such a passion for the food they create and are an outstanding example of a successful small business that started right here in Charlotte. Halal Street Food will be an amazing addition to the atmosphere and retail offerings on the new Keswick Platform,” said Tommy Mann, development director at Camp North End.
The expansion of Halal Street Food to Camp North End was facilitated by a dedicated team. Camp North End was represented in the development deal by Aaron Ligon and Chapman Chastain of Ascent Real Estate Partners. Halal Street Food was represented by Sink Kimmel of Selwyn Property Group.
As the new location prepares to open, excitement is building among Charlotte’s food enthusiasts. Halal Street Food’s commitment to quality, flavor, and cultural fusion promises to make their new restaurant a must-visit destination. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to their offerings, the Camp North End location is set to provide an unforgettable dining experience.
