“We’re thrilled to bring together a variety of Halal food for the entire community,” said Tasneem Chhadiya, founder of Event Maker. “This event is about sharing our culture, bringing people together, and celebrating the rich diversity of Halal cuisine.”
What is Halal?
Halal, an Arabic term permissible or acceptable, refers to food adhering to Islamic dietary laws. This includes meat that is slaughtered specifically and is free from toxins and other harmful ingredients. Foods like pork and alcohol are strictly prohibited under Halal guidelines.
A First for Cambridge
This festival marks the first large-scale Halal food event in Cambridge, aside from the smaller Eid Bazaars held annually at the Islamic Centre of Cambridge on Dunbar Road. The Halal Food Festival aims to provide a vibrant, inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy a variety of Halal foods.
Fun for the Whole Family
The festival isn’t just about food. It’s a family-friendly event with plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained. “We’ve got train rides and bouncy castles for the kids, henna tattoos, and live performances,” Chhadiya said. “Parking is free, and entry is free to ensure everyone can join in the fun.”
With Riverside Park offering a massive space, the event will have a carnival atmosphere, complete with rides, activities, and games. This makes it an ideal summer outing for families and food lovers alike.
Culinary Delights from Around the World
Attendees can look forward to a mouth-watering array of dishes, from kabobs and burgers to BBQ and grilled meats, not to mention a variety of decadent desserts. The festival will feature culinary specialties from different cultures worldwide, including Punjabi food, traditional Muslim dishes, and meat and vegetarian options.
“We’re bringing the best food from different cultures together in one place,” Chhadiya noted. “There’s something for everyone, and we want people to experience the richness of Halal cuisine.”
Overcoming Controversy
The event did face some controversy with plans to include a live Garba, a traditional Hindu dance, which had to be canceled due to religious concerns. “We received feedback that it should be performed in a prescribed manner specific to Hindu traditions,” Chhadiya explained. “To respect those concerns, we decided to cancel that portion.”
A Community Celebration
Event Maker has never held an outdoor event of this scale before, but they are expecting around 5,000 people to attend. “We are excited to be out in the community again with another event, and this will be the foodie event of the year,” Chhadiya said.
Festival Details
The festivities will run from August 1 to August 3, from noon until 9 p.m. each day. “Come out and enjoy good food, good music, and a fun time,” Chhadiya added. “This festival is about community, culture, and, most importantly, delicious Halal food.”
