ICNA Relief, a leading national domestic relief organization, is stepping up its efforts to combat educational disparities ahead of the 2023-24 academic year. The organization is preparing to distribute a projected 20,400 backpacks filled with school supplies to K-12 students across the United States.
In an environment where the cost of school supplies has soared, many families grapple with the financial strain of equipping their children for the upcoming school year. This financial challenge not only obstructs academic success but also deepens existing disparities within the education system. The issue is further compounded by the undue financial burden shouldered by the nation’s educators. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that an astonishing 94% of public school teachers spend their own money on classroom materials without receiving reimbursement.
Dr. Saima Azfar, Director of the Back2School Program at ICNA Relief, underlines the crucial role of basic school supplies in fostering students’ academic success. “It is not realistic to expect students to excel in school if they lack basic supplies such as pens, notebooks, pencils, and calculators. Equally, we cannot expect teachers to feel motivated and equipped to teach if students are inadequately prepared. Ensuring students have access to these essential learning materials is a key element in their academic journey,” Azfar expressed.
In a significant move towards leveling the educational playing field, ICNA Relief is hosting distribution events in Illinois. Students stand to receive an array of supplies, including but not limited to backpacks, notebooks, pencils, and binders.
However, ICNA Relief’s endeavors go beyond providing tangible supplies. By stepping in to fill this gap, the organization aims to instill a sense of preparedness and excitement in students as they face the upcoming school year. Moreover, easing the financial pressure on both families and teachers fosters an environment more conducive to learning and teaching.
ICNA Relief is calling for widespread support and involvement in this national effort, inviting corporations, small businesses, and individuals to contribute. It is through collective action that we can ensure every student begins the 2023-24 school year with the resources they need to learn effectively, and every teacher steps into their classroom empowered to educate.
