The 4th Istanbul Digital Art Festival (IDAF), a beacon for digital art innovation, recently convened at the iconic Atatürk Cultural Center in Istanbul. This premier event, titled “Istanbul Digital Arts Festival Discusses Economic Perspectives, Future Visions of Digital Art,” operates under the theme “Search Reality” and is celebrated as Turkey’s first and only international digital art festival. It showcases the works of 55 talented artists guided by the expertise of four distinguished curators. Running until May 5, IDAF offers a rich program that includes children and youth workshops, insightful panels on digital art’s economic and future aspects, and captivating audiovisual performances.
A highlight of this year’s festival was the panel discussion, “The Rise of Digital Art: Economic Perspectives and Future Visions,” moderated by the esteemed curator Esra Ozkan. The debate featured a lineup of experts who delved into the burgeoning digital cultural economy—an increasingly important area for Turkey. Ziya Taskent, Secretary General of the Istanbul Development Agency, emphasized the strategic role of the 12th Development Plan in fostering activities within this sector, aligning closely with the festival’s theme.
Duygu Yaygir, head of the Cultural Services and Creative Industries Department at the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, discussed the shift towards new-generation service exports, where creative industry services, rich in intellectual property, play a pivotal role. These services, Yaygir noted, are crucial for their high-added value to the economy.
In an era where traditional boundaries of art are being continually redefined, artist Bager Akbay highlighted the contributions of TRT2, Turkey’s public broadcaster’s culture and art channel. Akbay called for more structured support for digital art, citing the need for regular programs that foster artistic innovation and risk-taking, akin to Europe’s century-long support of individual artists.
Ebru Yetiskin Dogrusoz, an associate professor at Istanbul Technical University, pointed out the relatively late focus on economic studies in digital arts within the country. She proposed flexible strategies for integrating digital art more deeply into professional and academic frameworks.
