Malaysia, a recognized global leader in the halal industry, is taking strategic steps to enhance its role in the international halal exhibition space. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who chairs the Halal Industry Development Council, recently announced a bold initiative to streamline and coordinate the country’s halal exhibitions. His vision centers on maximizing the industry’s global impact and increasing its international footprint.
Importance of Coordinated Halal Exhibitions
Malaysia hosts a range of high-profile halal exhibitions, each serving a distinct purpose. Major events like the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS), Halal Fiesta Malaysia (Halfest), and the Rural Entrepreneurs Carnival (KUD) have made substantial contributions to the industry, catering to both domestic and international markets.
However, Deputy Prime Minister Zahid believes there is untapped potential in adopting a more unified approach. He proposes consolidating these exhibitions into a larger, centrally organized event. This strategy would bring together halal product exhibitors, manufacturers, and foreign traders under one roof, making it easier for businesses to network, form partnerships, and connect directly with international buyers. A coordinated platform would streamline business-to-business (B2B) matchmaking and present foreign investors with a comprehensive view of Malaysia’s halal offerings, making the process of sourcing halal products more efficient.
Going Beyond Product Displays: The Halal Supply Chain
Zahid’s vision extends beyond showcasing final products. He stresses the importance of focusing on the entire halal supply chain, particularly Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) products, which often form the backbone of halal goods. He encourages industry players to ensure that all aspects of production, from raw materials to finished products, adhere to stringent halal standards.
To achieve this, Zahid highlights the need for closer collaboration among key business associations such as the Malaysian Islamic Chamber of Commerce (DPIM) and the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM). By working together, these organizations can form consortia to engage in large-scale production of halal ingredients and materials. This would bolster Malaysia’s ability to meet the growing global demand for halal products, especially in critical sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other related industries.
Collaboration Over Competition
A crucial element of Zahid’s strategy is fostering cooperation within the halal industry. He argues that internal competition for the same markets and products can limit Malaysia’s potential. Instead, Zahid urges businesses to collaborate under a unified “Malaysian Halal” brand. This consolidated brand would have a stronger international presence, opening doors to larger markets and enabling Malaysian halal products to command a more significant share of the global halal economy. A unified brand would also strengthen Malaysia’s reputation as a trusted source of high-quality halal products, providing a competitive edge in the international marketplace.
Introducing Halal Product Month
In a further effort to elevate Malaysia’s halal industry, Zahid announced the launch of Halal Product Month, beginning in September 2025. This annual event will focus on key sectors, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, traditional medicine, herbs, and supplements. The aim is to create a specialized platform where entrepreneurs, producers, and manufacturers can collaborate, innovate, and meet the stringent requirements of global halal markets. Halal Product Month will not only showcase new products but also serve as a springboard for businesses looking to expand their presence in international markets.
A Growing Industry with Global Ambitions
Malaysia’s halal industry is already thriving, with halal exports currently valued at RM53.72 billion, representing 3.8% of the nation’s total exports. The unified approach proposed by Zahid, combined with the launch of Halal Product Month, signals Malaysia’s intent to take its halal industry to new heights. By focusing on coordination, collaboration, and innovation, Malaysia is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the expanding global halal market.
With these bold initiatives, Malaysia is not only streamlining its halal exhibitions but also setting the stage for sustained growth and greater international influence in the halal industry. The country’s ongoing efforts to consolidate resources, enhance the halal supply chain, and establish a cohesive national brand reflect its commitment to remaining a global leader in the ever-growing halal market.
