In a significant update from Kota Bharu, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) has reported an impressive compliance rate with halal certification standards among businesses across the nation. More than 90% of halal certificate holders are consistently adhering to JAKIM’s rigorous guidelines. This high level of compliance underscores the commitment of Malaysian businesses to uphold ethical and responsible practices, reinforcing Malaysia’s reputation as a leader in the global halal market.
Proactive Approach of JAKIM
Rasyidah Che Wil, Senior Assistant Director of JAKIM’s Halal Management Division, highlighted the proactive efforts of businesses to maintain the integrity of their halal certification. She explained that maintaining such standards is crucial not only for business continuity but also for gaining consumer trust and accessing international markets.
During the Malaysian Halal Certification Seminar, part of the Malaysian Halal Management System (MHMS) 2020 initiative, Rasyidah outlined the importance of consistent compliance. “Businesses must adhere to our guidelines consistently. Failure to comply can lead to suspension or revocation of their certification, depending on the severity of the offense,” she stated. JAKIM’s approach is to engage in discussions with businesses first, addressing any non-compliance issues directly and constructively.
The Global Impact of Halal Certification
The seminar also shed light on the broader implications of halal certification for business expansion. Halal-certified businesses enjoy heightened customer confidence, which is crucial in today’s global marketplace. This certification opens doors to international markets, especially in regions where halal products are in high demand.
Local Initiatives and Broadening Access
Adding to the discourse, Datuk Md Anizam Ab Rahman, Chairman of the State Investment, Industry, Human Resources, Trade, and Entrepreneurship Committee, discussed local government initiatives in Kelantan. He revealed that the possession of a halal certificate has become a mandatory condition for renewing business licenses within the jurisdiction of the Islamic City of Kota Bharu Municipal Council. This requirement will soon extend to other districts, emphasizing the state’s commitment to ensuring that businesses operate under halal and clean conditions.
As of June, Kelantan alone boasts 411 halal certificate holders, with 44 of them owned by non-Muslim traders, showcasing the inclusive nature of the certification process. This diversity not only enhances the local economy but also promotes a unified standard of business ethics and cleanliness.
Malaysia’s Strategic Position in the Global Halal Market
The push for halal certification is more than just a regulatory requirement; it is a strategic move that positions Malaysian businesses as trustworthy partners in the global market. JAKIM’s rigorous certification process ensures that businesses not only meet local standards but also stand ready to meet the international demand for halal products. This strategy not only supports Muslim consumers but also caters to a broader audience looking for quality and ethically compliant goods.
JAKIM strategic management and promotion of halal certification play a crucial role in enhancing Malaysia’s economic and cultural presence globally. With a remarkable compliance rate and proactive government initiatives, Malaysia is well-positioned to continue as a major influencer in the international halal market. This commitment not only strengthens intercultural business ties but also champions economic inclusivity, making Malaysia a model for integrating cultural values with global trade practices.
