MANILA: The Philippines has recently been honored with a significant accolade at this year’s Halal in Travel Global Summit, which is expected to greatly motivate industry stakeholders to cater more effectively to visitors from Muslim and Middle Eastern countries, tourism authorities announced on Saturday.
Recognition at Halal in Travel Global Summit
The Philippines was recognized as an Emerging Muslim-friendly non-organization of Islamic Cooperation Destination at the summit held by Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index in Singapore on May 30. This prestigious index is an annual report benchmarking destinations in the Muslim travel market, and receiving such recognition is a testament to the country’s growing appeal among Muslim travelers.
Tourism Undersecretary Myra Paz Abubakar expressed enthusiasm over the recognition, stating, “Being acknowledged by the world’s leading halal travel authority is a big boon for the Philippines. It will undoubtedly energize our tourism stakeholders, incentivize our partners, and ensure that the Philippines emerges as a preferred destination for Muslims, including those in the Middle East.”
Efforts to Cater to Muslim Travelers
This award not only highlights the Philippines’ efforts to cater to the needs of Muslim tourists but also catalyzes further developments in the sector. In 2023, the Philippines also won the Emerging Muslim-friendly Destination award at the Halal in Travel Global Summit. Since then, the country has significantly ramped up its efforts to attract visitors from the Middle East and neighboring Muslim-majority countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. Ensuring access to halal products and services has been a cornerstone of these efforts.
The predominantly Catholic country, where Muslims make up about 10 percent of the nearly 120 million population, has welcomed more than 2 million international travelers since the beginning of the year. This marks a 10 percent increase in visitors from Gulf countries, including key emerging markets like Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships
Earlier this month, the Department of Tourism led a delegation to the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai, where it showcased the country’s top destinations. During the event, the department signed an agreement with one of the largest Philippine hospitality chains to transform its properties into Muslim-friendly and halal-friendly establishments.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco emphasized the importance of these initiatives, stating, “As a country known for its warm hospitality, rich cultural heritage, and breathtaking natural attractions, catering to the needs of Muslim travelers through the development of halal tourism is crucial in ensuring that we raise our competitiveness in the global tourism market. Adapting to the changing needs of Muslim travelers by offering halal-friendly accommodations, dining options, prayer facilities, and other services not only enhances the overall visitor experience but also showcases our respect for diverse cultural and religious practices.”
Boosting Halal Travel in the Philippines
The recognition at the Halal in Travel Global Summit is expected to boost the Philippines’ profile as a halal travel destination. The government’s commitment to improving halal travel infrastructure includes enhancing the availability of halal-certified food, ensuring the presence of prayer facilities, and offering halal-friendly accommodations across the country. These efforts are aimed at making the Philippines a more attractive and accommodating destination for Muslim travelers.
By continuously improving its services and facilities to meet the needs of Muslim tourists, the Philippines is well-positioned to tap into the growing halal travel market. The recent accolades serve as both a recognition of the progress made and a motivation to further enhance the country’s offerings.
The Philippines’ win at the Halal in Travel Global Summit is more than just an award; it is a recognition of the country’s dedication to becoming a top destination for Muslim travelers. With strategic initiatives, partnerships, and a commitment to providing halal-friendly services, the Philippines is set to significantly boost its tourism sector. This award not only energizes industry stakeholders but also sets a benchmark for other destinations aiming to attract the burgeoning Muslim travel market.
