The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council – Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) has launched the “Jom Potong 2024” campaign to boost zakat contributions through a monthly salary deduction scheme. Running for six months, this campaign aims to achieve an ambitious Zakat Goal of RM90 million by engaging 7,000 Zakat payers. This initiative underscores the council’s strategic efforts to streamline zakat collection and distribution, ensuring continuous support for snap (eligible zakat recipients) and promoting social equity. Through tax incentives and convenient payment methods, PPZ-MAIWP is making it easier and more rewarding for Muslims to fulfill their zakat obligations.
Objectives and Importance of the Campaign
The “Jom Potong 2024” campaign is not just about hitting financial targets but also about ensuring the sustainability of zakat distribution to asnaf (those eligible to receive zakat) in the Federal Territories. Datuk Abdul Hakim Amir Osman, CEO of PPZ-MAIWP, emphasized that regular zakat payments through the monthly deduction scheme are critical. “Paying zakat through the monthly deduction scheme is highly encouraged because the distribution of zakat to a snap, such as monthly financial assistance, depends entirely on this collection,” he stated during the campaign launch.
One of the main attractions of the monthly zakat deduction scheme is the significant tax benefits. Participants are eligible for a 100 percent income tax rebate from the Inland Revenue Board. Additionally, they receive automatic coverage under the Kafalah Muzakki Scheme, which provides a death benefit of up to RM3,000. This dual incentive makes the scheme highly beneficial, encouraging more individuals to participate and ensuring financial security for their families (BERNAMA).
Increasing Popularity and Participation
Abdul Hakim is optimistic about the scheme’s growing popularity, citing its simplicity and systematic approach. He noted that these features make it easier for zakat payers to fulfill their obligations. Moreover, the campaign includes a motivational aspect: 250 zakat payers stand a chance to win attractive prizes, such as Umrah packages, electric motorcycles, massage chairs, and air wheel luggage. Those interested can easily participate by filling out an online form via ptg.zakat.com.my, with PPZ-MAIWP handling the salary deduction process directly with their employers.
Significant Increase in Zakat Collections
The campaign is part of a broader trend of increasing zakat contributions. In the first five months of 2024, PPZ-MAIWP collected over RM454.45 million, marking a 15 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This substantial rise is attributed to the growing number of zakat payers, which reached 345,309 in 2024, up from 302,205 in 2023. This steady growth indicates a positive trajectory towards achieving the annual target of RM1.1 billion (Kosmo Digital).
Strategic Collaboration and Future Outlook
The collaboration between PPZ-MAIWP and employers to facilitate monthly deductions underscores a strategic approach to meeting the Zakat Goal. By fostering a culture of regular zakat payment, these efforts contribute significantly to social equity and economic stability. The success of the “Jom Potong 2024” campaign and similar initiatives is crucial for maintaining and enhancing the social welfare infrastructure supported by Zakat funds.
Broader Impact on Social Welfare and Economic Stability
The systematic collection and distribution of zakat have far-reaching impacts on social welfare and economic stability. Zakat, one of the five pillars of Islam, plays a crucial role in poverty alleviation and social justice. Regular zakat payments ensure a steady flow of resources to support a snap, which includes the poor, the needy, and other eligible groups. This continuous support helps in addressing immediate needs and facilitating long-term socio-economic development.
Embracing Technology for Efficient Zakat Management
PPZ-MAIWP’s approach to zakat collection and management is also embracing technological advancements. By utilizing online platforms for registration and payment processing, the council ensures a seamless experience for zakat payers. The use of digital tools not only enhances efficiency but also broadens the reach, making it easier for more people to participate in the Zakat system. This tech-driven approach aligns with global trends in financial management and reflects the progressive stance of the Malaysian zakat system.
Encouraging Community Involvement
Community involvement is a cornerstone of the “Jom Potong 2024” campaign. By making the zakat payment process straightforward and rewarding, PPZ-MAIWP is encouraging more Muslims to fulfill their religious obligations. The campaign’s incentives, including the opportunity to win prizes, further motivate participation. This approach not only boosts zakat contributions but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility among participants (BERNAMA).
Through continuous innovation and strategic initiatives like the “Jom Potong 2024” campaign, Malaysia’s zakat collection system is set for sustained growth. By leveraging technological advancements and collaborative efforts, PPZ-MAIWP aims to enhance the effectiveness and reach of the Zakat collection. These initiatives ensure that the Zakat Goal is not only met but exceeded, significantly contributing to social equity and economic stability. The proactive measures and incentives provided by PPZ-MAIWP underscore the importance of regular zakat payments, highlighting the positive impact on the community and promoting a culture of giving and support for those in need.
