The Queens Chamber of Commerce, a cornerstone institution in Queens and the largest business association in the borough, recently declared Nur Thai as the victor of its inaugural “Queens’ Best Halal Restaurant Competition.” The modern Thai fusion restaurant, nestled in the bustling neighborhood of Astoria at 31-01 34th Ave., was honored with a commemorative plaque and a complimentary year-long membership to the Queens Chamber of Commerce.
In response to the win, Sazzad Hossain, Director and COO of Amani Hospitality Group, which operates Nur Thai, expressed his excitement and gratitude. “Being recognized as the best halal restaurant in such a vibrant community is a reflection of the hard work and passion our team brings to every dish,” he said. Hossain also extended thanks to the restaurant’s dedicated staff and loyal patrons whose support made this achievement possible.
The competition saw food enthusiasts from across the borough and beyond casting over 1,500 votes, highlighting the diverse and rich culinary landscape of Queens. “The array of halal cuisine available in Queens attracts visitors from all over New York and beyond,” noted Tom Grech, President and CEO of the Queens Chamber of Commerce, congratulating Nur Thai on their exemplary commitment to quality and community service.
Nur Thai, which also boasts a location in Rego Park at 63-32 Woodhaven Blvd, prides itself on offering authentically crafted Thai cuisine that adheres to halal standards. This includes using fresh Zabiha-certified meats and a variety of hand-crafted mocktails and spices that cater to a diverse clientele.
Queens Borough President Donovan Richards praised the competition, highlighting the borough’s role as a hub for excellent halal eateries that adhere to Muslim dietary laws. “It’s a great honor to declare Nur Thai as Queens’ best halal restaurant,” Richards said, extending an invitation to dine at the celebrated establishment.
State Senator Kristen Gonzalez also commented on the significance of the event, emphasizing the importance of increasing public awareness about halal food and supporting local businesses. The competition not only spotlighted the variety within the halal food scene but also celebrated the cultural contributions of such establishments to the borough’s diverse community.
The tight competition saw Mr. Chang Halal Chinese, located at 25-45 Steinway St. in Astoria, and Khalil Biryani House, at 167-20 Hillside Ave. in Jamaica, finishing closely in second and third place, respectively, each distinguished by a narrow margin of just ten votes.
Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani acknowledged the stiff competition and the significance of Nur Thai’s win, congratulating the team for their standout performance in a borough known for its culinary excellence. Council Member Tiffany Cabán echoed these sentiments, celebrating Nur Thai’s role in fostering community togetherness, especially important during challenging times for Queens’ Muslim families.
