Australian Muslim boxer Tina Rahimi has vehemently criticized France’s recent decision to ban athletes from wearing hijabs during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Rahimi, known for proudly wearing her hijab during competitions, has highlighted the adverse effects of this ban on Muslim athletes, calling it a significant blow to their dreams and religious freedoms. This move by France, intended to uphold secularism, has sparked widespread controversy and debate, drawing attention from international rights groups and prompting discussions on religious expression in sports.
Rahimi’s Background and Ban on Hijab
Rahimi, a 28-year-old boxer from Bankstown in western Sydney, qualified for the Paris Olympics as part of Australia’s largest-ever boxing team. Known for her skill and determination, Rahimi secured a bronze medal in the featherweight division at the Commonwealth Games last year. Despite her achievements, she is deeply troubled by France’s stance on religious attire.
France’s Ban and Its Rationale
In April 2023, France announced its ban on hijabs for its athletes, citing the principle of secularism. French Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra stated that the decision was made to uphold this principle. However, the ban has faced significant backlash both domestically and internationally.
Rahimi’s Response
Rahimi expressed her frustration on social media, stating, “This has got to do with the laws in France. Thankfully, I’m still able to participate in my hijab, which I’m so grateful for. But it’s so unfortunate for the athletes in France because it has nothing to do with their performance. It should not get in the way of you being an athlete.”
Impact on Athletes’ Dreams
The hijab ban has been criticized for undermining the dreams and efforts of Muslim athletes. Rahimi added, “It’s so hard for you to be an Olympic athlete and to think that you have to give away your faith to participate in these events. I believe everyone should be equal. How is my hijab going to affect anything? People grow up wanting to go to the Olympics, and it’s all that they work towards, and all that they want to achieve. That would be taking away someone’s dream. I stand by all the French girls… It’s unfortunate.”
Broader Context of Hijab Ban in Sports
France is currently the only country in Europe that prohibits hijab-wearing women from participating in most domestic sports competitions. This policy has been deemed discriminatory by various rights groups and is said to contravene both the International Olympic Committee’s guidelines and international treaty obligations that France is required to uphold.
In June 2023, the French Council of State upheld a ban imposed by the French Football Federation on female footballers wearing hijabs during games. Amnesty International has warned that such bans have detrimental mental and physical effects on women, leading to “humiliation, trauma, and fear.”
International Reactions
The United Nations has also addressed the issue, with a spokeswoman from the UN Rights Office in Geneva emphasizing that “no one should impose on a woman what she needs to wear or not to wear.” She pointed out that discriminatory practices against specific groups can have harmful consequences and that restrictions on expressions of religion or beliefs, such as attire choices, are only acceptable under very specific circumstances.
