Boracay is transforming to become a more Muslim-friendly destination. The Department of Tourism (DOT) is partnering with the local government of Malay, Aklan, to launch the “Muslim-Friendly Boracay” initiative in September. This initiative aims to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for Muslim travelers, enhancing their experience on the island.
Private Coves for Muslim Women
One of the key features of the “Muslim-Friendly Boracay” initiative is the opening of private coves exclusively for Muslim women. These secluded areas will provide a comfortable and private space for women to relax and enjoy the beautiful island without privacy concerns. Malay Mayor Floribar Bautista has already identified three potential areas for these coves, which will be officially launched in September, according to DOT Undersecretary for Muslim Affairs Myra Paz Valderrosa-Abubakar.
Enhanced Facilities for Muslim Travelers
In addition to private coves, the municipality plans to redesign Boracay’s port to include a prayer room and ablution area for Muslims, ensuring that their religious practices are accommodated. This move is part of a broader effort to make the island more accommodating and attractive to Muslim tourists.
Muslim-Friendly Accommodations and Halal Kitchens
The DOT invites letters of intent from Boracay accommodation establishments that wish to be recognized as Muslim-friendly stays. One notable development is the potential addition of a Halal-certified kitchen at one of Megaworld Hotels and Resorts’ properties on the island. Boracay’s Newcoast, a 150-hectare mixed-use leisure and resort development, is home to several hotels and is part of Megaworld’s townships in the country.
“So, everything aligns perfectly,” Valderrosa-Abubakar said. “There will be a private cove for Muslims, a hotel with a Halal kitchen, and even an airline interested in partnering with the DOT to offer Halal-friendly services.”
Broader Impact and Future Plans
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco first announced the Muslim-Friendly Boracay initiative at the opening of the Salaam 2024: Travel and Trade Expo in Quezon City. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to boost the Philippines’ appeal as a Muslim-friendly destination, recognizing the growing market of Muslim travelers globally.
The launch of the “Muslim-Friendly Boracay” initiative marks a significant step towards making the island a more inclusive and welcoming destination for Muslim tourists. With the introduction of private coves, enhanced facilities, and Halal-certified accommodations, Boracay is set to become a prime location for Muslim travelers seeking a comfortable and enjoyable vacation experience. This initiative highlights Boracay’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and positions it as a leading destination in the competitive global tourism market.
