As part of Thailand’s broader strategy to attract Middle Eastern tourists, the city of Chiang Mai is launching its inaugural Halal Food Festival next month. This gastronomic event, the first of its kind in the city, will spotlight the diverse halal culinary traditions from all four regions of Thailand, under the banner of “Unseen Chiang Mai,” as announced by provincial governor Nirat Pongsitthavorn.
The Halal Food Festival is a strategic initiative designed to appeal to Middle Eastern tourists, who are recognized for their substantial spending and preference for extended vacations. The festival is also intended to whet appetites for the city’s International Food Festival, which coincides with the peak travel period of July and August.
Governor Pongsitthavorn expressed his hope that the Halal Food Festival will become a recurring highlight in Chiang Mai’s annual tourism events, contributing to the city’s global appeal.
The president of the Chiang Mai Tourism Business Association, Supamitr Kijjapipat, revealed that the festival will run throughout July and will feature a range of top-quality halal-certified restaurants. With over 20 local halal restaurants participating, the event promises to offer an enriching culinary journey for both Thai and international tourists.

Kijjapipat also projected that the festival will provide a significant boost to the local economy, given the expected influx of visitors to the province.
In parallel with the food festival, Chiang Mai is promoting a series of destinations, including Chiang Dao, Mae On, Wiang Haeng, Mae Cham, and Mae Kwang, under the “Unseen” theme from July to September. These promotional efforts will highlight the region’s lush natural landscapes during the rainy season, as well as its diverse local culture, traditions, and ethnic groups, offering a comprehensive and authentic Thai experience to tourists.
This initiative is part of Thailand’s larger efforts to attract Middle Eastern tourists, demonstrating the country’s commitment to catering to diverse dietary preferences and cultural sensitivities while showcasing its rich culinary and cultural heritage.
