MOGADISHU, Somalia – This year, the holy month of Ramadan has coincided with the longest recorded drought in Somalia, leaving many without adequate resources to break their daily fast. While Muslims worldwide gather to end their fasts with great dinners, countless Somalis, like Hadiiq Abdulle Mohamed and her family, have little more than water and whatever food they can find.
Over one million Somalis have been displaced in search of assistance, with an estimated 43,000 people losing their lives last year alone. Mohamed, her husband, and their six children now reside in one of the expanding displacement camps around the capital, Mogadishu. The ongoing drought is exacerbated by five consecutive failed rainy seasons, causing the loss of millions of livestock that form an essential part of the local diet.
The situation has been further aggravated by a surge in food prices during Ramadan. The country grapples with inflation partly triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the devastation of local crops. Consequently, food has become even scarcer for the displaced population. For their daily sustenance during Ramadan, Mohamed and her family depend on the goodwill of others to provide their single meal a day.
Initially, they break their fast with water and pieces of dates, followed by spoons of rice. Finally, they consume the donated meal consisting of rice cooked with mixed meat, bruised bananas, and a small plastic juice bag. To receive these provisions, Mohamed must wait long hours in line under the scorching sun.
The dire circumstances facing many Somalis during this Ramadan highlight the urgent need for humanitarian aid and efforts to mitigate the effects of drought and climate change in the region. International organizations and local governments must work together to provide essential food, water, and medical supplies and address the root causes of these crises to prevent further suffering.
As the global community observes the holy month of Ramadan, it is crucial to recognize the hardship millions of Somalis face and extend support in any way possible. This assistance can come through donations, raising awareness, or advocating for policy changes to ensure a better future for those affected by these unprecedented challenges.
