The Ministry of Finance and Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) are gearing up to host the “Global Forum of Islamic Economics and Finance: Shaping a Resilient Global Islamic Economy Through Values-Based Reforms” (GFIEF) from May 28-29, 2024, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. This prestigious event, in collaboration with partners such as the Securities Commission Malaysia, Labuan Financial Services Authority, the International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation, the Islamic Development Bank, the Islamic Financial Services Board, and the World Bank Group, aims to continue the momentum gained from the 15th International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance held recently in Kuala Lumpur.
Under the theme ‘Shaping a Resilient Global Islamic Economy Through Values-based Reforms,’ GFIEF will convene global policymakers, business leaders, and financial experts to discuss and collaborate on the future of Islamic economics and finance. This sector is increasingly seen as a worldwide driver for promoting shared prosperity and equity.
The Malaysian Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, will officially open the forum and feature a rich presentation agenda, panel discussion, and fireside chats. Topics will cover global cooperation, strategies for navigating post-pandemic challenges, the objectives of Sharia (Maqasid Shariah), and sustainable transitions towards net zero emissions.
GFIEF will also highlight an impressive roster of international speakers, including H.E. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria; H.E. Dr. Fahad Ibrahim Alshathri, Deputy Governor of Saudi Central Bank; and Dame Susan Rice, Chair of the Global Steering Group for The Global Ethical Finance Initiative. Other noted speakers include Ha-Joon Chang, a Research Professor at SOAS University of London, and Dr. Jasser Auda, President of the Maqasid Institute Global.
Notable Malaysian figures such as Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Minister of Finance II, and Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former Governor of BNM and recipient of the Royal Award for Islamic Finance, will also grace the event. The forum will serve as a platform for thought leadership and present business opportunities by connecting attendees with a diverse array of exhibitors ranging from regulators and government agencies to fintech startups and non-profits.
Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan stressed the importance of Islamic finance’s ethical framework, noting that GFIEF is poised to advance Islamic economics and finance through values-based reforms that foster global equity and prosperity.
BNM Governor Datuk Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour expressed optimism about the forum’s potential to generate actionable insights for leveraging Islamic finance in tackling global economic challenges. He anticipates that the discussions will inspire innovative ideas and collective action, paving the way for sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
