It feels surreal—The Halal Guys is finally coming to Manila! When I first heard the news late last November, I almost couldn’t believe it. A friend shared a snapshot of the iconic Halal Guys signage at the Mega Food Hall in SM Megamall, sparking a wave of excitement.
Without wasting a moment, I sent a quick message to The Halal Guys via Facebook, asking, “Is it true you’re opening a store in the Philippines?” While eagerly waiting for a reply, I reached out to Millie Dizon, SM’s Vice President for Marketing Communications, who confirmed, “As per Mega, it’s the Halal Guys from New York.” My heart raced with joy, and all I could do was cue some internal (and external) screaming.
Three days later, The Halal Guys responded, confirming the big news: “Yes, we’re expanding to the Philippines, but we have no further details to share at this time. We are working hard to expand worldwide.” That’s when it hit me—Manila is about to experience one of New York’s most beloved street food experiences.
A New York Legend Comes to Manila
For those who may not be familiar, The Halal Guys is not just any food cart—it’s a New York institution and one of my absolute favorites. Starting as a humble hotdog cart in 1990 in Midtown Manhattan, it transformed two years later when its three Egyptian founders decided to sell halal food, and the rest is history. What began as a single cart quickly turned into an iconic brand, spawning countless copycats trying to replicate their distinct flavors. But true fans always know the difference—the long lines around the cart are a tell-tale sign of the real deal. They have since expanded to more carts and opened their first restaurant on 14th Street and 2nd Avenue.

A Line Worth the Wait
Whether you’re a longtime fan or trying it for the first time, lining up for The Halal Guys is an experience in itself. It’s not uncommon to find lines stretching around the block, with people willing to wait for the chance to dig into one of their legendary platters. Even some of New York’s top chefs have been spotted waiting for over two hours to get a taste of the iconic combo on Christmas Eve!
While The Halal Guys also serve wraps, their platters are the ultimate star—featuring either chicken, gyro, or a mix of both, served over warm, fragrant orange basmati rice, fresh lettuce, and fluffy pita on the side. And then, of course, there’s the sauce: their signature white sauce that’s tangy, creamy, and utterly addictive, and the fiery red sauce that packs a punch (and is not for the faint-hearted!). Each platter is crafted with speed and precision, yet never loses its delicious appeal.
New York’s Favorite, Now in Manila
For me, The Halal Guys’ platters are more than just food—they’re a quintessential New York experience and my go-to cheap meal when visiting the city. At just $6 for a generous serving, it’s a meal that not only satisfies but usually leaves me with leftovers to enjoy for breakfast the next day. It’s also a night owl’s dream, as some locations are open until 5 a.m., making it perfect for late-night cravings.
Whenever I share my New York food recommendations, The Halal Guys is always at the top of the list, regardless of budget. The food is unpretentious, comforting, and bursting with flavor. Over the years, I’ve converted countless friends into Halal Guys enthusiasts.
Every time I’m in New York, I make it a point to grab a platter at least three times. There’s something about eating it right there on the sidewalk, surrounded by the city’s energy, that makes it an unforgettable experience. Sometimes, luck is on our side, and we find a table and chairs outside a nearby bank to enjoy our meal a little more comfortably.
Bringing the Halal Guys Experience to Manila
Now, thanks to Jaime Daez, the entrepreneur behind Fully Booked, The Halal Guys is making its way to Manila. This is just one of several international food brands coming to the Philippines this year, including Din Tai Fung, Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, Dean & DeLuca, Pink’s Hotdogs, and Shake Shack (can’t wait for the Shack Stack and Concretes!).
The anticipation is real, and I can hardly wait for my first bite of that delicious, perfectly balanced platter right here in Manila. The flavors, the aroma, and the joy of indulging in one of New York’s most iconic street foods—without the long flight—will soon be a reality for all food lovers in the city.
Manila, get ready to be wowed by the true flavors of New York’s street food scene, brought to you by The Halal Guys. I know I’ll be first in line!
