Halal Development Corporation Berhad (HDC), Malaysia’s
premier agency under the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) driving the
development of the global Halal industry, anticipates a substantial surge in Halal trade
between Malaysia and Japan in 2024 and beyond. HDC’s Chairman, Khairul Azwan Harun
highlighted key factors contributing to this growth trajectory, citing heightened Halal
awareness and adoption among consumers and businesses, political stability, conducive
investor environments, technological innovation in the Halal supply chain, and the upcoming
World Expo 2025 in Osaka.
“Halal trade between Malaysia and Japan is poised for significant expansion in 2024 and
beyond,” said Azwan. We have observed a remarkable rise in Halal awareness among
consumers and businesses, particularly in sectors such as food and beverage, cosmetics, and
tourism. This, coupled with Malaysia’s political stability and investor-friendly Halal ecosystem,
as well as our commitment to gold standards in Halal certification, sets a strong foundation for
robust trade relations between our two nations.” he added.
“Malaysia’s total export amounted to MYR59.46 billion in 2022, with Halal exports to Japan
reaching MYR3.6 billion,” Azwan stated. “Despite the challenges posed by the global
economic uncertainties, this represents the highest figure since 2018, underscoring the
resilience and growth potential of Malaysia’s Halal exports.”
The role of technology adoption and innovation also serves as a driving force in enhancing
the Halal supply chain, ensuring quality, efficiency, and transparency.
The forthcoming World Expo 2025 in Osaka presents a significant opportunity to showcase
Malaysia’s Halal excellence on the global stage and further strengthen bilateral trade ties
between Malaysia and Japan.
HDC is actively encouraging Malaysian businesses, especially Small and Medium Enterprises
(SMEs), to venture into the Halal market opportunities between Malaysia and Japan. This
involves not only exporting Malaysian products to Japan but also positioning Malaysia as a
Halal hub for Japanese companies seeking to tap into the global Halal market.
HDC remains committed to facilitating and nurturing the growth of Halal trade between
Malaysia and Japan, leveraging its expertise, partnerships, and strategic initiatives to unlock
the full potential of the Halal industry and contribute to the economic prosperity of both nations.
Malaysia, as a predominantly Muslim country with a robust Halal ecosystem, provides Japan
with access to a market of over 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. By collaborating with Malaysia,
Japanese companies can leverage their expertise and resources to enter this market more
effectively, expand their customer base, and diversify their revenue streams.
