In the heart of the Islamic world, Saudi Arabia is making a bold and strategic push to position itself as the global leader of the halal industry. The Kingdom’s efforts are not just about economic growth; they are about creating a unified, sustainable, and inclusive global halal ecosystem that reflects the values of integrity, transparency, and excellence.
At the recent Makkah Halal Forum, a panel of industry leaders and government officials gathered to discuss “The Kingdom’s Efforts in Advancing the Global Halal Ecosystem.” Moderated by Dr. Bandar S. Arab, Executive Director at Savola World Foundation, the session featured insights from H.E. Eng. Saud Al-Askar, Deputy Governor for Conformity and Operations at the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO); H.E. Dr. Adel AlKeaid; H.E. Eng. Abdulaziz AlRushodi; and Mr. Ameen Al Saadi, CEO of the Saudi Halal Center.
What emerged from the discussion was a compelling narrative of ambition, collaboration, and innovation—a blueprint for how Saudi Arabia is reshaping the global halal industry.
1. Collaboration: The Foundation of Economic Growth
The halal industry is no longer confined to food; it spans pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, logistics, finance, and even tourism. Recognizing this, Saudi Arabia is fostering unprecedented collaboration among stakeholders within the Kingdom.
H.E. Eng. Saud Al-Askar emphasized the importance of unity in driving economic growth. “The halal industry is a multi-trillion-dollar sector with immense potential,” he said. “By bringing together stakeholders from diverse sectors, we are creating a cohesive ecosystem that fosters innovation and creates opportunities for all.”
This collaborative approach is already paying dividends. The Kingdom’s halal industry has become a significant contributor to its non-oil GDP, aligning perfectly with the Vision 2030 initiative to diversify the economy. By uniting producers, regulators, and consumers, Saudi Arabia is setting a new standard for how the halal industry can thrive.
2. Strengthening Partnerships: A Synergistic Approach
The panel underscored the importance of partnerships—both within the Kingdom and internationally—to unlock the full potential of the halal industry. H.E. Dr. Adel AlKeaid highlighted the role of public-private partnerships in driving progress.
“The halal industry is a shared responsibility,” AlKeaid said. “Government agencies, private companies, and certification bodies must work hand-in-hand to create a seamless ecosystem that benefits everyone.”
One standout example is the collaboration between the Saudi Halal Center and international certification bodies to harmonize halal standards. These efforts have not only streamlined processes but also enhanced the Kingdom’s credibility as a global leader in halal certification.
3. Partnership Development: Building a Global Network
Mr. Ameen Al Saadi, CEO of the Saudi Halal Center, provided a glimpse into the Kingdom’s ambitious plans to develop strategic partnerships with key stakeholders worldwide. “Our vision is to create a global network of halal-certified products and services,” Al Saadi explained. “This requires close collaboration with international organizations, governments, and industry leaders.”
The Saudi Halal Center has been instrumental in these efforts, working to align halal standards across different countries. By eliminating barriers to trade and ensuring global compliance, the Kingdom is paving the way for a more integrated and accessible halal market.
4. Quality Infrastructure: The Backbone of the Halal Ecosystem
No industry can thrive without a robust quality infrastructure, and the halal sector is no exception. H.E. Eng. Abdulaziz AlRushodi detailed the Kingdom’s investments in creating a world-class framework to support the halal ecosystem.
“From standardization to certification, Saudi Arabia is committed to ensuring the highest levels of quality and safety,” AlRushodi said. “This not only protects consumers but also enhances the competitiveness of our halal products in the global market.”
The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has been at the forefront of this effort, developing comprehensive halal standards that align with international best practices. These standards cover every aspect of production, processing, packaging, and labeling, ensuring that Saudi halal products meet the highest global benchmarks.
A Vision for the Future: Beyond Economics
What sets Saudi Arabia’s efforts apart is their holistic approach. The Kingdom is not just focused on economic growth; it is committed to creating a sustainable and inclusive industry that benefits Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
Dr. Bandar S. Arab, the panel’s moderator, encapsulated this vision in his closing remarks. “The halal industry is a testament to the values of integrity, transparency, and excellence,” he said. “By working together, we can build a global ecosystem that reflects these values and serves as a model for other industries.”
Saudi Arabia’s leadership in the halal industry is more than a business strategy; it is a reflection of its role as the cradle of Islam and a global economic powerhouse. By fostering collaboration, strengthening partnerships, and investing in quality infrastructure, the Kingdom is not only shaping the future of the halal industry but also redefining it.
For businesses, investors, and consumers worldwide, this is a call to action. The global halal ecosystem is evolving, and Saudi Arabia is leading the way. The question is no longer whether the halal industry will grow—it’s how quickly we can align with this transformative vision.
