The evening commenced with a Quran recitation from Surah Al-Ma’idah, followed by an introduction to the Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA) by Rahman Abdul, a 3rd-year medical student. As the president of the new Victorian subcommittee, Rahman outlined the committee’s purpose and ongoing initiatives aimed at fostering student growth, inspiration, networking, and professional development.
One notable initiative is AIMA Careers Corner, a nationwide platform dedicated to assisting Australian healthcare professionals with career progression at all stages, from students to professors. This platform aims to provide comprehensive support, ensuring healthcare professionals can navigate their career paths effectively.
The panelists introduced themselves, setting the stage for a deep dive into carefully constructed OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) style scenarios. These scenarios highlighted key issues such as thriving in healthcare as a Muslim and the vital role healthcare professionals play in advocating for the Muslim community. The discussions were centered around upholding Islamic values, standing for justice, and utilizing the Islamic perspective to enhance healthcare skills.
Dr. Bhayat’s insightful reframing of the word “surviving” to “thriving” resonated deeply with the audience. He emphasized that Islam empowers healthcare professionals to flourish, not just get by. Br. Yousef reinforced this point by sharing Quranic lessons and prophetic examples on patient care, illustrating how Islamic principles can be integrated into professional practice.
The panelists then shared their unique journeys in healthcare, inspiring students to reach their full potential. The attendees had the opportunity to connect with like-minded Muslim medical students and network with the panelists, fostering a sense of community and mutual support.
A standout moment was Dr. Amireh’s recent $230 million victory following the settlement of a junior doctor underpayment class action. This success story served as real-world evidence of Muslim achievements in advocating for justice within the healthcare system, inspiring all in attendance.
Sr. Wajiha and Sr. Huda provided raw and honest insights into their experiences working in pharmacy and nursing. They highlighted the immense dedication required from healthcare professionals outside of medicine to ensure world-class patient care. Their stories underscored the importance of every role within the healthcare system, showcasing the collective effort needed to achieve excellence.
The event concluded successfully, thanks to the enthusiastic participation of AIMA committee volunteers and the generosity of the speakers in sharing their expertise. This gathering not only provided medical students with practical advice and inspiration but also reinforced the importance of community, advocacy, and the integration of Islamic values in their professional lives.
The 9th Halal Trade and Tourism Expo at the SMX Convention Centre showcased a global hub for halal products, networking, and business opportunities. With an emphasis on student growth and professional development, events like these are pivotal in shaping the future of Muslim medical students and healthcare professionals.
