In the sweltering heat of July, as the deserts of the Arab Peninsula stretched out endless and vast, a lone cyclist began a remarkable journey. Issa Al-Qazaqza, a passionate Jordanian globetrotter, embarked on a voyage not just of miles but of meaning, pedaling through Gulf states with a singular mission: to sow seeds of love and unity.
As Al-Qazaqza pedaled through the golden sands, he carried with him more than just essentials. He bore a message, a hope to fortify the bond among Arab brethren in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and to shine a light on the warmth of Jordanian hospitality and its vibrant tourism.
Beginning his Arabian sojourn on July 18th in Saudi Arabia, Al-Qazaqza recounted his travels to Arab News from Doha, Qatar’s bustling capital. “I was drawn to places rich in history and spirit, like Tabuk, Madinah, AlUla, Al-Ahsa, Al-Sharqiya, and Riyadh. And the spiritual heart of the region, Makkah, where I was blessed to perform Umrah,” he shared, a note of reverence in his voice.
This isn’t the 44-year-old’s first dance with long-distance cycling. Rewind to 2005, Al-Qazaqza was on the saddle for a 420 km ride, bridging the northern city of Irbid to the picturesque seaport city of Aqaba in Jordan. But as the wheels turned on countless domestic routes, a grander vision took shape. “The idea evolved organically,” he said, “A dream to traverse the GCC, carrying Jordan’s message of love, peace, and the promise of its breathtaking landscapes.”
Throughout his three-week stay in Saudi Arabia, he journeyed across emblematic cities and cultural landmarks, eventually reaching Qatar through the Salwa border on August 1. But this trip was no walk (or ride) in the park. It was “long and arduous,” as described by the Jordan News Agency.
His bicycle, adorned with the Jordanian flag, drew intrigue and interest. He recalls, “The flag and the unique look of my bicycle often became the conversation starter. But more than anything, I hope it conveyed the warmth, brotherhood, and generosity that Jordan stands for.”
Thursday saw him at the Jordanian Embassy in Doha, where he was warmly received by the diplomatic staff, sharing tales of his adventure and the spontaneous connections he made on the way.
In an era where distances are often measured by rifts and differences, Issa Al-Qazaqza’s journey stands as a testament to the timeless power of genuine connections, goodwill, and the unifying spirit of travel.
