A primary school in Wakefield, England, has apologized for serving non-halal meat that was labeled as halal.
The principal of Outwood Primary Academy Greenhill, Martin Fenton, said that the school had discovered last week that not all the meat served to pupils in the past was halal, despite being labeled as such.
Mr. Fenton said that the mistake had been made by the school’s catering provider and that the school had immediately changed its ordering process.
He said that the school had also appointed a specialist catering company to ensure that halal meat would be served in the future.
Wakefield East councilor Akef Akbar said that he was “extremely disappointed” that the school had misrepresented halal food. He said that students and parents could have made an informed decision to eat vegetarian meals if they had known that the meat was not halal.
However, Mr. Akbar said that he appreciated the school’s “transparent and prompt” action and their “commitment to treating this matter seriously.”
The school said that it would be writing to all parents to apologize for the mistake.

Halal Food
Halal food is food that adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the Koran. Halal food must be slaughtered in a specific way and cannot contain any pork or alcohol.
In recent years, there has been a growing demand for halal food in the United Kingdom. This is due in part to the increasing number of Muslims living in the country.
The mistake at Outwood Primary Academy is the latest in a series of incidents involving the mislabeling of halal food. In 2017, a school in Birmingham was forced to apologize after it was revealed that non-halal meat had been served to pupils.
The incident at Outwood Primary Academy is a reminder of the importance of ensuring that halal food is properly labeled. This is especially important for Muslim students who may have religious objections to eating non-halal food.
