LAHORE: In response to an international overture, the government of Punjab has initiated measures to promote and expand the meat and poultry industry in the province, focusing primarily on beef exports. A delegation from China, representing a significant export market for Pakistan, recently met with the Punjab Livestock Minister, Ibrahim Murad. During the meeting, they highlighted their desire to import meat, specifically beef, from Pakistan, and articulated the importance of ensuring that the meat consignments were disease-free. As part of the proposed safeguards, the Chinese delegation discussed the idea of setting up a vaccine preparation center for animals in Punjab and requested support in terms of land provision and other necessary facilities to establish this center.
Acknowledging the significance of this partnership, both sides agreed to work in tandem on controlling livestock diseases in Punjab. They also discussed the possibility of setting up a dedicated dairy economic zone, aimed at bolstering dairy production, and are in the process of preparing a formal proposal.
The Punjab government, under the aegis of caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, convened a strategic meeting on Sunday to take stock of the actions needed to enhance the province’s livestock production and exports. The Chief Minister called for a comprehensive blueprint aimed at stimulating improvement and growth in the livestock and dairy sectors throughout Punjab.

Following the discussions, it was decided that the government would take immediate steps to promote the meat and poultry industry. A key outcome of the meeting was the decision to designate the Bahawalpur division as the ‘Meat Division’ of Punjab. In line with this, the government decided to formulate a comprehensive policy on meat export, aimed at identifying and removing all obstacles hindering the growth of the beef, mutton, and poultry industries.
Identifying key areas of focus, the Punjab government noted that the adoption of the latest systems for semen preservation, farm management, livestock vaccinations, Halal certification, and traceability of livestock products was necessary for improving meat exports, particularly to markets in China and Gulf states. Participants at the meeting underscored the need for the poultry industry to shift towards mechanization to meet the increasing demands and standards of international markets.
Several experts, including Fawad Mukhtar, Naveed Iqbal, and Prof Talat Naseer Pasha, were present at the meeting. They offered their expertise on various aspects of the meat industry, providing recommendations and outlining potential strategies for growth.
Key attendees included Minister Murad, the Chief Secretary, Chairman Planning & Development Board, local government and finance secretaries, and other relevant officials.
