A teacher at Dauphin Middle School in Pennsylvania has resigned following an incident where she allegedly called a 12-year-old Palestinian-American student a “terrorist.” The incident reportedly occurred on January 16th during an after-school class. The student, a seventh-grader, had simply asked to change seats when the unidentified female teacher responded, “I do not negotiate with terrorists,” according to the student’s father, Adam Rahman. Mr. Rahman told WHP that the remark left his son feeling deeply humiliated and marginalized, describing the experience as if “the whole world around him was spinning.” He expressed concern about the ease with which the teacher used such discriminatory language in front of other students.
The school district announced the teacher’s resignation at a school board meeting on Monday, shortly after the Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a statement calling for an “expedited” investigation into the matter. However, the Rahman family and community members expressed dissatisfaction with the district’s handling of the situation. They argued that allowing the teacher to resign without a formal apology or further disciplinary action was insufficient. The student’s brother told WHP that the incident has significantly impacted the young boy, eroding his trust in teachers and causing considerable emotional distress. He questioned the lack of remorse shown by the teacher, emphasizing the lasting impact such an experience can have on a child.
During Monday’s school board meeting, several community members voiced their concerns. They argued that stronger disciplinary measures should have been taken against the teacher, beyond simply accepting her resignation. Some speakers also advocated for the integration of Palestinian, Muslim, and Arab history into the school curriculum, suggesting that a lack of understanding may contribute to such incidents.
School board president Michael Jacobs read a prepared statement acknowledging the incident and reiterating the district’s “zero-tolerance” policy for hateful speech. He emphasized the district’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and stated that the teacher’s alleged actions violated both staff policies and the district’s core values. The district declined to comment further on the specifics of the incident or any planned future actions.
Mr. Rahman told media outlets that his family is exploring legal options, including potential action against the school and pressing charges against the former teacher. The family is seeking accountability for the emotional harm caused to their son and aims to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The incident has sparked broader discussions within the community about diversity, inclusion, and the responsibility of educators to create a safe and respectful learning environment for all students.
