UNICEF Reports Thousands of Starving Children in Southern Gaza Cut Off from Aid

The Dire Situation about Gaza Children

According to UNICEF, nearly 3,000 children in southern Gaza are at risk of dying from malnutrition. These children, who were previously receiving care for moderate to severe acute malnutrition, are now left without access to essential health services due to the ongoing conflict. Adele Khodr, UNICEF’s regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, highlighted the severity of the situation, stating that without immediate intervention, these children could face life-threatening complications.

Impact of the Conflict

The conflict, which began in October last year, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement. Israeli forces have killed over 37,000 people, most of whom are women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. She warned that prolonged starvation could impact both the physical and cognitive development of children, leading to long-term consequences.

UNICEF reports that malnutrition screenings in Gaza’s southern and central regions have shown a rise in moderate and severe malnutrition cases since mid-May. Treating a malnourished child typically requires six to eight weeks of uninterrupted care, including special therapeutic food and formula. However, these items are scarce, and the collapsed water and healthcare systems further complicate the situation.

The Vicious Cycle

Malnourished children also face compromised immune systems, making them more susceptible to infections that can be fatal. Dr. Haj-Hasan explained that a simple illness, such as a viral infection or diarrheal disease, could lead to a malnourished child’s death. “You end up in this vicious cycle where recurrent bouts of diarrhea, illness, and malnutrition lead to further health deterioration,” she said.

International Response and Allegations

Israel has faced accusations of committing genocide against Palestinians, a charge it denies. Francesca Albanese, the U.N. special rapporteur for the region, released a report earlier this year suggesting that Israel’s actions since October could amount to genocide.
