The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) applauded a resolution passed by the New York State Senate on Wednesday, officially recognizing February 1, 2025, as World Hijab Day, as reported by Anadolu Agency. The resolution, introduced by Senator Roxanne Persaud, aims to promote religious tolerance, cultural understanding, and international solidarity, underscoring the importance of embracing diversity and fostering mutual respect.
In a statement, CAIR highlighted that World Hijab Day, now in its 12th year, serves as a global platform to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and celebrate the empowerment of women who choose to wear the hijab. The organization emphasized the day’s role in creating meaningful dialogue and dismantling misconceptions about the hijab and the women who wear it.
Afaf Nasher, Executive Director of CAIR-NY, praised the resolution, stating, “This recognition reflects New York’s commitment to honoring cultural and religious diversity. World Hijab Day is a powerful opportunity to amplify the voices of hijab-wearing women and to address the prejudice and discrimination they often face in their daily lives.”
Nasher also expressed deep appreciation for Senator Roxanne J. Persaud, acknowledging her dedication and advocacy in advancing the resolution. “We are profoundly grateful to Senator Persaud for her leadership and unwavering support in championing this important initiative,” she added.
World Hijab Day was founded in 2013 by Nazma Khan, a New York-based activist, with the goal of promoting religious tolerance and cultural understanding. According to its official website, the initiative encourages women from all walks of life to experience wearing the hijab for a day, fostering empathy, dialogue, and a deeper appreciation for the choices of Muslim women. Since its inception, the day has gained global recognition, with participants from over 190 countries joining in solidarity to celebrate diversity and challenge stereotypes.
The resolution’s passage in New York marks a significant step forward in recognizing the contributions of Muslim women and reaffirms the state’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for all religious and cultural practices.
